Sartorial survival tips” from Canada

whole “Style Advice for Short Men” article seems to crop up in newspapers on a fairly regular basis. In the publishing biz, we call that an “Evergreen” piece. It’s perennial, timeless — always good on a slow news day. The “Short Man” version usually imparts some variation of the same basic stylist commandments: Stand Up Straight, Wear Stripes, Don’t Cuff Your Trousers.

I’m not saying these stories are without merit; the advice is sound. And if you’re short and aren’t already aware of some of the basic advice out there, these summaries can be a good starting point to building a better-looking wardrobe.But for me, I’m always looking for something more. Something that goes beyond the basics. The most recent example of this evergreen story popped up this week in Canada. The Vancouver Sun published a story by J.J. Lee called“Sartorial Survival Tips for Short Men.”It covers a lot of the usual bases, but I did think this was an interesting point:Menswear has traditionally been conceived for the average male who stands at 5′10.”

While all designs are “graded” (that’s a fashion industry term for scaling clothes to fit various sizes), grading does not guarantee clothes will actually look good on smaller men. Often something is lost in the translation.Then there’s the problem finding small or extra small items on the racks.Blame the scarcity on the trend towards tighter and shorter garb.

Many hipsters, sized medium and large, have been horning in on tinier togs, leaving short guys to pick through the dregs.So the same fashion-industry trend that’s responsible for the current rise in smaller cuts is also responsible for those sizes being less available. Drat.

Banana Republic adds XS sizes

Earlier this year, Banana Republic threw small guys a bone: They debuted Extra Small sizes in dress shirts, polos, T-shirts, sweaters, and a few pieces of outerwear. Huzzah!
BR’s a dependable source for mid-priced office attire, so it’s great that they’ve expanded to include sizes for the shorter third of the US male population. And sort of surprising that it took them this long to tap into that market (given that Brother Gap has had XS for ages).

But… the XS sizes are only available online. Bah.

It sucks that their XS clothes aren’t carried in stores — especially because the issue of fit is all important for short men. And they don’t have the best return policy. You can return most (but not all) items in store. But if you need to ship something back to them, it’ll cost you. My feeling is that if you can only order something online, you should be able to return it for free (a la Zappos).

Bottom line for me is this: It’s nice that they’re making an effort. But there is no good reason that big chains like this can’t devote a little bit of floor space to us. Especially when you consider that every time you see a sale rack, it’s loaded down with larger sizes that they made too many of and can’t seem to move. You hardly ever see many smaller sizes on sale.

So if you’d like to see Banana Republic sell XS men’s clothing in its stores, tell them what you think.

Havaianas and Threadless Debut Six Designs on Flip-Flops, T’s

Havaianas, the amazingly popular and remarkably comfortable flip-flop line from Brazil, unveiled in NYC on July 8 the winning designs that came out of the first flip-flop design contest, held in partnership with Threadless.com, the online community-based T-shirt company. Six pairs of flip-flops and six matching T’s debuted on Havaianas’s website and were launched nationwide on July 12. Democratic design has been gaining force in the fashion world as companies are “crowd sourcing” and allowing the general public to be part of the artistic process. Havaianas wanted to involve its consumers and fans in this inventive development by hosting the contest in March. The “Threadless Loves Havaianas” design competition was Threadless’s first foray into the accessories category and the site’s first design challenge outside of T’s. The site received more than 600 design submissions from contestants around the world. Artists Farhan Hassan from Singapore and Alvaro Arteaga Sabaini from Chile drew the highest number of votes and were named the winners. They joined the existing designs by Josh Perkins from Arizona, Jess Fink from New York, Ross Zietz from Chicago, and Emmy Cicierega from Massachusetts to form the collection. The flip-flops will be sold exclusively on the Havaianas website for $28 each. Threadless.com will produce and sell T’s featuring the six winning designs for $18-$20.
